Formerly DJ Shonuff and DJ Sho, I've been DJing for 13 years. I first started using a four-track player, some guitar fx boxes, a tape player, and two consumer cd decks--all strung together by a web of mismatched wires from my band's studio equipment storage. I started drumming in bands at the age of 11 and once hit with the electronic dance music bug, I started recording mix tapes back before it was possible to burn cds at home.
After a year of that, I tried to move my drumkit with me when I moved from NYC to Colorado for college, only there was no safe place to put it and my neighbors wouldn't allow me to bang things that loudly. So, I rolled down to Denver and picked up a pair of Technics 1200 turntables and a Numark mixer and began cutting and scratching, waxing and milking, rocking breakbeats and hip-hop alongside a very well known DJ-transplant from Long Island.
Soon I was playing House all over the country, and especially picking up steam in the Colorado scene. I spun alongside greats like Donald Glaude and Angel Alanis, did a global new years DJ set web-cast on Radio Valve, and was asked to spin Danny Masterson's 21st birthday at his crib in Hollywood Hills which culminated in a near private performance by Moby and his full band - to name a few highlights. Needless to say, DJing / producing became my career.
I moved back to my hometown of NYC and began a Saturday weekly residency at the LES's Guernica which had just transformed from the infamous Robots. That party was HUGE - I spun 6 hours a night to a sea of swimming beauties. The crowd was so thick, security would have to plow a path for me to take a bathroom break - and sometimes they were completely unsuccessful. Occasionally, I resorted to relieving myself in empty bottles in the DJ booth just to keep the party jumping. There was a constant line around the block 'til 2am. Bartenders danced on the bar, kids tried to climb up into the DJ booth, all the while security was trying to keep things from getting too frenzied - cha.
After a few years of production work and continued live band performance, I'm back touring, mixing on multiple CD decks, a laptop, live instruments, and anything I feel might make a hot, danceable groove. YOU should definitely come check out a show. I've got some great collaborations going on, including a line-up of singles waiting for international release. Lately, it's been numerous gigs, some spins on XM Satellite Radio, a couple of original singles dropped at the 2009 Winter Music Conference, and I'm always cooking up new tasty treats to drop on the floor - catch em and nourish your soul.
