Screw Sugar

Use Agave Nectar...

As a sweetener, Agave nectar's glycemic index and glycemic load are lower than most natural sweeteners on the market, and it tastes delicious!

Keep in mind, Agave exists in varying grades -- the darker the grade, the less it will mess with your blood sugar levels.

Get a Seawater Boost

Folks, staying highly mineralized is the key to good health. Thankfully, this news is beginning to resonate around the world. Seawater contains all essential and trace minerals known and unknown to humankind, and minerals are the building blocks of life -- especially those active, vibrant, alive minerals found in clean ocean waters.

Researchers in Italy just reported that the nutritional content of tomatoes improves when the plants are irrigated with diluted seawater. Remember, you are what you eat...

DJ Nutritious

Formerly DJ Shonuff and DJ Sho, I've been DJing for 13 years. I first started using a four-track player, some guitar fx boxes, a tape player, and two consumer cd decks--all strung together by a web of mismatched wires from my band's studio equipment storage. I started drumming in bands at the age of 11 and once hit with the electronic dance music bug, I started recording mix tapes back before it was possible to burn cds at home.

After a year of that, I tried to move my drumkit with me when I moved from NYC to Colorado for college, only there was no safe place to put it and my neighbors wouldn't allow me to bang things that loudly. So, I rolled down to Denver and picked up a pair of Technics 1200 turntables and a Numark mixer and began cutting and scratching, waxing and milking, rocking breakbeats and hip-hop alongside a very well known DJ-transplant from Long Island.

Soon I was playing House all over the country, and especially picking up steam in the Colorado scene. I spun alongside greats like Donald Glaude and Angel Alanis, did a global new years DJ set web-cast on Radio Valve, and was asked to spin Danny Masterson's 21st birthday at his crib in Hollywood Hills which culminated in a near private performance by Moby and his full band - to name a few highlights. Needless to say, DJing / producing became my career.

I moved back to my hometown of NYC and began a Saturday weekly residency at the LES's Guernica which had just transformed from the infamous Robots. That party was HUGE - I spun 6 hours a night to a sea of swimming beauties. The crowd was so thick, security would have to plow a path for me to take a bathroom break - and sometimes they were completely unsuccessful. Occasionally, I resorted to relieving myself in empty bottles in the DJ booth just to keep the party jumping. There was a constant line around the block 'til 2am. Bartenders danced on the bar, kids tried to climb up into the DJ booth, all the while security was trying to keep things from getting too frenzied - cha.

After a few years of production work and continued live band performance, I'm back touring, mixing on multiple CD decks, a laptop, live instruments, and anything I feel might make a hot, danceable groove. YOU should definitely come check out a show. I've got some great collaborations going on, including a line-up of singles waiting for international release. Lately, it's been numerous gigs, some spins on XM Satellite Radio, a couple of original singles dropped at the 2009 Winter Music Conference, and I'm always cooking up new tasty treats to drop on the floor - catch em and nourish your soul.

Spread It, Spin It!

Thursday, May 8th, 10pm, with yours truly, DJ Nutritious.

Reuse: The Record Bowl

Last summer I was strolling through a record store in Provincetown, MA when I noticed these cool looking record bowls pinned to the walls. They were made by the store owner and she was hockin em for 7 bucks a piece. Personally, I have hundreds of pounds of old techno and electronica records that might, just might, earn me a dollar if I sold them to one of the few remaining record stores here in NYC.

Spinning vinyl and wax has become a thing of the past. With the low cost of CDRs and the efficiency and affordability of burning, distributing, and performing digitally, I rarely find a club gig that provides some good old fashioned turntables. So, when I finally finish digitizing my old club record collection, I'm gonna spin some dusty records into these cool recycled record bowls. Check out this website for the recipe.

Sometimes all we need is a quick blast of the right food -- something easy 2 swallow, easy 2 digest -- something easy 2 feel...

This recipe satisfies hunger and combines the blissful, heart healthy energetics earned from chocolate with the all-inspiring maca root. Maca is known to enhance respiration, increase vitality, and boost energy levels. Raw chocolate regulates heart function, promotes love, stimulates our bliss receptors, and is a natural appetite suppressant.

So, here you go... Chef Mike's Choco Maca Injection -- a viscous nectar that's quick, e-z, and guaranteed to make you feel fantastic and satiated. I wish I could sport an IV of this magic sauce. I'm not playin -- I use this whenever I need a 'lil xtra sumthin, sumthin!

Serves 1

Ingredients:

1 tablespoon raw cacao powder
1 tablespoon maca root powder
pinch of celtic sea salt or himalayan pink salt
1 tablespoon dark agave nectar (or grade b/c maple syrup / wild honey)
splash of og vanilla extract

Preparation:

Blend ingredients in a Vita-Mix blender for 20 seconds (or stir vigorously with mortar and pestle). Once smooth, spoonfully indulge.

See you on the other side!
